Huntington's disease and combination drug therapy

Abstract:
Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by a genetic mutation, leading to progressive movement, emotional, and cognitive deficits. Recently, research into the genetic mechanisms of this disease have begun to provide new insights. In this study, Huntingtons disease model R6/2 transgenic mice treated were treated with creatine, tacrine and moclobemide. Drug therapy was aimed at boosting neurotransmitter levels and improving cognitive function. Whole brain hemispheres from R6/2 and normal mice were examined using the Affymetrix U74Av2 GeneChip. Statistical and biological analysis was performed with GeneSifter. This microarray analysis system was also used to map differentially expressed genes to candidate biological terms and pathways. Several clear patterns of gene expression were discovered which correlated with genes involved in cognitive function and neuronal signal transduction.
