Cn3D is used to view 3 dimensional
structures stored in MMDB (NCBI's molecular modeling database) and is
freely available from the National Center of Biotechnology Information
(NCBI) (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
This tutorial demonstrates
how to:
1. Install
Cn3D on a PC with a Windows operating system
2. Download
files of 3-dimensional structures from NCBI's structure database,
MMDB, and open them with Cn3D.
Properties of amino acids
When working with protein
sequences it's sometimes helpful to have a reference for the one and three
letter codes for amino acids and for the different properties associated
with each amino acid. A good reference is available at: http://www.bioscience.org/urllists/aminacid.htm
Before you begin, here are
some helpful hints:
These pages will only work
with Netscape (4.0, 4.6, and 4.7) and Internet Explorer versions, 3.0
and later. Note: These pages do not work with Netscape 6.0.
In many slides the green
arrows point to the link that would be selected at NCBI's site. Click
the green arrows to move to the next slide.
To see information repeated,
reload the page, or return to a previous slide by using the "Back"
button on your browser.
The links shown on the following
slides are not active, in most slides only the green arrrows have
active links.
It's often helpful to have
two web browser windows open at the same time so that you can view the
tutorial in one window and view the live site in the other. How do I open
two web browser windows?
This series is not
meant as a comprehensive description of NCBI's programs, merely a quick
guide to help you get started.
