Bio21: Teaching Biology with Bioinformatics

October 17-18th, 2003 Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Instructional Activities

Analysis of a gene that confers resistance to HIV (The_HIV.pdf, 292kb)
This assignment covers using MapViewer, the UCSC Genome Browser, BLAT, BLAST, LocusLink, ORFFinder. Some of the concepts discussed in this assignment include SNPs, resistance to HIV, receptors, deletions, paralogous genes, gene families, coding sequences, open reading frames and gene clusters.

Activities for high school students
Available at http://cstaff.hinsdale86.org/~kgabric/BioStudentWB.htm
They are also published at The Inquiry Page (A University of Illinois site) that is easily searchable and has other materials as well. Search by Biology Student Workbench. http://inquiry.uiuc.edu

Contributed by Kathleen M. Gabric, Hinsdale Central High School, Hinsdale, IL

Circadian Biology Bioinformatics Exercises
Available at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Class/MLACourse/Modules/cover_circadian_exercises.html
This activity contains aseries of questions/answers that facilitate the exploration of NCBI Resources. It's designed for the course "Introduction to Molecular Biology Information Resources" offered by NCBI to library-based bioinformatics specialists (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Class/MLACourse/).

Contributed by Donna Messersmith, Ph.D., Labs-Now LLC, PO Box 386, Garrett Park, MD

Bioinformatics Assignment from Bio374, Genetics (CJ_Bio21BIOINF374.pdf, 232kb)
This assignment provides students with an introduction to the use of bioinforamtics analysis tools and databases in the study of genetics. Students use the KUMC Genetics Glossary, BLAST, covering ESTs, cDNAs, proteins, and ExPASy

Contributed by Colleeen Jacks, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN

Gene Identification Through Restriction Mapping (CJ_Bio21RestrMap.pdf, 68kb)
This assignment uses Webcutter, GenBank, and Arabidopsis chlorophyll binding proteins to identify different chlorophyll binding proteins by the pattern of their restriction sites.

Contributed by Colleeen Jacks, Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Peter, MN

Gene Hunting with BLAST and the TIGR CMR database
http://www.tigr.org/edutrain/pdfs/Gene%20Hunting.pdf

Contributed by Lisa McDonald, The Institute for Genomics Research, Rockville, MD

Restriction Mapping (restriction_mapping.pdf, 116kb)
This activity uses Webcutter and GenBank.
